The Sweet Meadow just turned four months old at the start of this week. It also dawned on me that it's been almost five months since I've received a regular wage. That's almost half a year! It's pretty funny considering I've never worked harder in my life and yet I've also never been as broke as I am now.
Well, they didn't say it was shit exactly. 'Disgusting' was the word they used, repeatedly. We'd literally only been open for an hour or two and had sent out a plate of gluten-free waffles to a table of two. I have so much love for this dish. It took a lot of trial and error to find a gluten-free vegan recipe that packed a punch.
This is The Sweet Meadow! What a blur the last few weeks have been.
I finished up at my former workplace on September 28, and just two days later, had a launch party for my friends and family. I had no intention of opening the cafe straight after, the launch was really just a way to stop and appreciate the huge effort that lots of people made to get this project off the ground.
I tried my first cup of coffee in March this year. Before that, I never understood what the fascination was and was pretty adamant that I would not be serving coffee at The Sweet Meadow.
After hearing about the death of Gene Wilder this week, the actor who played Willy Wonka in the the original film version of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, it got me thinking about one of Gene's most memorable quotes in the movie: "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."
